Australian Football: Wanderers slip to Nix defeat

Western Sydney Wanderers boss Mark Rudan says his side did not get any luck when slipping to a 2-1 home defeat against Wellington Phoenix.

The visitors picked up all three points to secure their place in the top six and are now priced at 16/1 to go on and win the grand final.

Disappointing season

For the Wanderers it will soon be time to go away, learn some lessons and get ready for next season when they will target finals once again.

That was the aim this season but it has been a disruptive one following the departure of former boss Carl Robinson midway through the season.

Rudan was unable to turn things around quickly enough to get them in to the six. Despite there being one or two encouraging signs.

They slipped to their 11th defeat of the season when losing to Wellington at CommBank Stadium on Thursday night.

No luck

Tomer Hemed got Rudan’s men back on level terms on 29 minutes after Sam Sutton had opened the scoring for Wellington three minutes in to the game. But Reno Piscopo grabbed the winner on 65 minutes.

Wanderers were unlucky not to equalising in the final minutes when striking the woodwork on two occasions.

"Luck was not on our side. And in sport, you need a bit of luck," Rudan said. "It's not like we didn't try. We got shots on goal and had the ball. They played on the counter-attack. And it took a world-class goal by Piscopo to do it."
