NRL: Wighton gets NSW Origin nod

New South Wales coach Brad Fittler has confirmed Jack Wighton and Kotoni Staggs will start in the centres for game one of State of Origin.

The Blues are priced at 4/6 to win the series and Fittler has announced the team that will go head-to-head with Queensland.

Fittler surprises

Fittler caused a bit of a stir when announcing his squad on Sunday night as both Josh Addo-Carr and Jake Trbojevic were left out of his 22. And the surprises kept on coming when he announced his team on Monday morning.

Penrith’s Stephen Crichton was expected to play centre, but will instead come off the bench in the No.14. Much to the surprise of Wighton.

"He keeps things pretty tight-knit Freddy. I am stoked," Wighton told AAP. "It's awesome. You know your role, you've got your job and it's something you can focus on all week. It's good instead of coming off the bench and not knowing what you're coming on to do."

Good form

Wighton has impressed for the Canberra Raiders in the last couple of weeks. That form combined with his Origin experience, proved to be crucial.

"He has looked fast and fresh and broke the line a lot," Fittler added. "The (Origin) experience (was key). I was mindful of not putting inexperienced people together. I think that is really important.

“Given the kicking game we have seen from Cherry-Evans and Munster. That has been a big part of our game. I think that is sometimes where experience under conditions can help."
