MLB - US Sports: Yankees injury list stretches

The New York Yankees lost All-Stars DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton to injuries on Tuesday night, although the early diagnosis on the former suggests New York dodged a serious issue.

The Yankees are 7/1 to win their first World Series since 2009 and LeMahieu was scratched from the side with left wrist discomfort while Stanton exited a 7-6, 11-inning win over Baltimore Orioles with right calf tightness.

Chapman added to injury list

The Yankees also placed closer Aroldis Chapman on the 15-day injured list with left Achilles tendinitis and activated catcher Kyle Higashioka from the injured list.

LeMahieu was set to lead off and play third base against the Orioles, but New York announced he wouldn't play about 90 minutes before the first pitch.

Boone offers positive update

Manager Aaron Boone said LeMahieu had an MRI on Tuesday but came back clean. The three-time Gold Glove winner got a cortisone shot but is expected back within a day or two.

The Yankees are still waiting to learn more about Stanton's injury, who will get an MRI on Wednesday. He was 0-2 with a strikeout as the designated hitter before leaving the game in the seventh inning.

Stanton was batting .285 with 11 home runs and a team-leading 35 RBI's. The 2017 NL MVP played 139 games last year after injuries limited him to just 41 in 2019 and 2020 combined.

Speaking to the official New York Yankees website, team manager Aaron Boone said about LeMahieu: "Really good news. We're pretty optimistic that hopefully he's back, if not tomorrow, the next day probably."

Chapman had an MRI on Monday that came back negative for a tear. Boone said on Tuesday that Chapman was improving but not game ready.
